Whatever else you can say about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, its short films occasionally do a good job of letting the air out of the connected universe’s balloon. (Maybe it’s just because they don’t have time for a six-hour final battle.) The best example so far is All Hail the King, Drew Pearce’s short with Ben Kingsley and Scoot McNairy, released on the Thor: The Dark World Blu-ray. It’s not a masterpiece of cinema or anything, but Kingsley playing washed-up actor Trevor Slattery is a delight, and the “Sabotage” vibe of his failed 1980s pilot (a low budget Red Heat rip-off) is certainly the best (and possibly only) reason to buy a copy of Thor: The Dark World. Now, with Captain America: Civil War on the way to home video, Marvel has released another short showing what Thor was up to during the events of the last film.

This time the vibe is straight from The Office, making full use of Chris Hemsworth’s blend of goofy, charming, and really, really annoying. Rather than choose sides in the all-Avengers civil war, he moved to Australia for some “me time” and is sharing an apartment with a hapless Australian named Darryl. It turns out he’s as baffled by the the connections between the films of the MCU as anyone, covering his walls with illegible diagrams trying to puzzle out the Infinity Stones. Plus, Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner asks the unanswered question about the Hulk: “I never wear cutoffs. How do I keep waking up in cutoffs?” Finally, and not too surprisingly, Thor’s email to Tony Stark reveals a punctuation style modeled after Channing Tatum’s. To save you the trouble of pausing, here’s the visible, albeit fragmentary, text:

Subject: Greetings!
Dear Tony Stark,
How’s it going? I was just thinking fondly on some of the times we had.
Remember when you created a possessed robot who nearly destroyed

It’s good to see Marvel carrying on the tradition of doing their best work on the margins. Captain America: Civil War gets a digital release on Sept. 2 before coming out on DVD and Blu-ray Sept. 13. Hey —we saved planet!!!!!!!!!!
