Sam Smith has already given power ballads from Whitney Houston, Tracy Chapman, and Amy Winehouse his own artful spin. He’s covered Winehouse’s “Tears Dry on Their Own” at several live shows, but a recent viewing of Amy, the documentary memorializing the singer, inspired Smith to cover “Love Is a Losing Game” from her 2006 album, “Back to Black.”
He debuted the cover on Annie Mac’s BBC show yesterday. Apparently it was a spur-of-the-moment decision on Smith’s part—he was in the studio that day to record another song, but he decided to “give it a go,” and “everything just came together.”
Afterward, Mac and Smith discussed Smith’s fascination with Winehouse. “People forget my age sometimes I think,” he said. “I was 11 years old when Frank came out, and that album has really shaped my views on music and my relationship with music lyrically.” The cover is available on In the Lonely Hour: Drowning Shadows Edition, out today. Listen to Winehouse’s original version below.
