You remember January, right? Those good old days when Joe Biden still had a chance and Anna Nicole Smith was still with us?

To cut through the clutter of the 24-hour cable-news cycle, Slate and VidLit are reviving and updating a lost art: the newsreel. The one-time staple of every movie theater is a great way to distill a given time period—last month, to be exact.
