The Church Lady Returned to SNL Just in Time for the Election. Isn’t That Special?

Over the weekend, Saturday Night Live invited back Dana Carvey’s beloved Church Lady to hand down some much-needed judgment on this mess of a year we’ve all been through. Predictably, she offered a pessimistic perspective on the two candidates in contention to start things out: “Do we vote for a bitter female android from the ’90s or a riverboat gambler with a big tummy and an orange head?” Tough choice indeed.

For the most part, however, Church Lady wasn’t there to dig into the nightmarish moral reckoning behind this election. Instead, she dutifully went through a laundry list of no-no topics, arguing against “homosexual” activities, drinking alcohol, and smoking pot—and accusing “Weekend Update” co-host Colin Jost of doing all three—before ending things on a somewhat cheery note. “I never lose hope, Colin—what a lovely little country we have here,” she said, before suspiciously getting into rhythm. “Sometimes I look around, and I think to myself: What a wonderful world.” Oh, Church Lady: For once, you probably could've gotten a little nastier.
