There’s a new way to watch one of 2015’s best movies: A black-and-white (or “black and chrome”) version of Mad Max: Fury Road is now available to stream, and it’s mesmerizing. The new, monochromatic edition, which is actually director George Miller’s preferred version of the movie, quietly appeared on Amazon earlier this week. (It’ll be available on DVD in the U.S. on Dec. 6.) Miller told Slashfilm last year that he faced two choices while trying to set Fury Road’s color scheme apart from other post-apocalyptic movies, which tend to have washed-out palettes: He could either crank up the color or go full black and white. Obviously, he went with the former for the movie’s theatrical release, and we got the lush teals and oranges that the film is known for. But it actually wasn’t his first pick. “The best version of this movie is black and white,” said Miller, “but people reserve that for art movies now.”
