Still taken from the trailer

Matthew McConaughey is in pursuit of gold—both the precious metal and the Oscar kind—in the new trailer for writer-director Stephen Gaghan’s first feature since Syriana. The trailer for Gold, which comes to us via a Vulture exclusive, tells the story of down-on-his-luck prospector Kenny Wells (McConaughey) and geologist Michael Acosta (Édgar Ramírez), who strike it rich after finding a gold mine in Indonesia, much to the delight of Wells’ wife (Bryce Dallas Howard). But Wells learns that not all that glitters is—well, you know—when the FBI gets involved in his find.

You could be forgiven for forgetting that McConaughey once starred in another film about a treasure hunter, one that was very poorly received in 2008. That he’s graduated from Fool’s Gold to the real kind is just another sign that the McConaissance isn’t over. Plus, we haven’t seen the actor looking this lively since The Wolf of Wall Street, which bodes well for both McConaughey and for his Oscar prospects.

Gold comes to theaters Dec. 25.
