Watch Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jennifer Lopez Perform Their Song for the Orlando Victims
Lin-Manuel Miranda, fresh off his final Hamilton performance, dropped by the Today Show this morning to perform his Orlando charity single with Jennifer Lopez, “Love Make the World Go Round.” Lopez led the performance in front of a crowd that included some 50 survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting and their families, with Miranda emerging halfway through from a sea of rainbow flags, wearing a shirt reading “love is love is love.”
The track samples parts of Miranda’s emotional Tony acceptance speech, the same speech that Lopez explained on Today was her reason for choosing Miranda to rap the song’s bridge, which echoes many of the same sentiments: “What we got is love even when the sinners hate us/ We can not let them diminish or intimidate us/ We sing out, we got the rhythm and the truth on our side/ We cut through the divide and we do it with pride.” For his part, Miranda expressed what he felt was the importance of working on a song for the Latino and LGBT communities with Lopez, who even scored a ticket to Miranda’s last night as Hamilton:
Even if some may find the song a little kitschy, they will have to admit it’s for a worthy cause. You can buy “Love Make the World Go Round” on iTunes here, with the proceeds going to the Somos Orlando (“We Are Orlando”) fund, which will offer mental health services for those affected by the Pulse shooting.
