With only a few weeks before his new album, Blackstar, drops, David Bowie has shared a second track from the LP, “Lazarus.” It’s a slow, smoky song—halting, spacey, and evocative all at once. In other words, it’s very Bowie. Clocking in at 6:24, this song is shorter than the previously released “Blackstar,” which is over 9 minutes long and comes with a very strange, unsettling music video. Where the title track’s sound tended toward the unnerving, “Lazarus”—as one might guess from the title—features a slightly more hopeful, if still haunted, narrator. “Just like a bluebird,” Bowie sings at the song’s close, “Oh I’ll be free/Ain’t that just like me.” Blackstar is due for release Jan. 8.
