High-End Sex Work Looks Very Sexy in the TV Version of Stephen Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience

In the first trailer for Starz’s The Girlfriend Experience, a character reflecting on her escorting experiences says, “It’s not something that I want to make into a career, but I actually enjoyed it.” Watching footage from the anthology series, it’s easy to see why: The young women in The Girlfriend Experience lounge in luxury hotels, order hundred-dollar bottles of wine, swim in the ocean while yachting, and have lots of very sexy-looking sex. According to this trailer, becoming an escort is a shortcut to living the good life. (Real-life escorts may or may not agree with this notion.)

The Girlfriend Experience stars Riley Keough as Christine Reade, a law student who’s drawn into high-end sex work when a classmate introduces her to men who will pay a hefty price for “the girlfriend experience.” The series is based on Steven Soderbergh’s 2009 movie starring former porn star Sasha Grey, in which Soderbergh “surveys the food chain of capitalist predation with a cool, dispassionate eye,” according to Slate movie critic Dana Stevens. However, the series is written and directed not by Soderbergh but by Amy Seimetz and Lodge Kerrigan, who’ve made some changes to the movie’s premise. (For instance, the series takes place in Chicago, not Manhattan.) The Girlfriend Experience will premiere on Starz in 2016.
