The New Trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Nostalgia Is Strong With This One

The first two trailers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens—and the umpteen posters, teasers, and assorted art leaks that accompanied them—have been appropriately abstract, mere breadcrumbs meant to whet fans’ appetite for a more sustained, concrete glimpse of the film’s plot and protagonists.

The third trailer, which aired during the halftime of Monday Night Football, delivers that glimpse, and the main takeaway here is that The Force Awakens looks thoroughly in the vein of the original Star Wars trilogy. Our two heroes, Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega), wander a desert planet like one Luke Skywalker. Kylo Ren, the movie's apparent villain, ponders Darth Vader's mask while saying, in a very Darth Vader-like voice, that he will “finish what you started.” And of course, there’s Han Solo and Princess Leia, looking old and grizzled and telling stories of a time long ago when Jedi fought the Dark Side. The nostalgia is strong in this one, folks. And thanks to director J.J. Abrams, so are the lens flares:
