In case you missed the memo: Nick Jonas, former Jonas Brother and current sex symbol, makes genuinely good music and should be taken seriously. In fact, the singer is so serious about proving his chops that he’s willing to cover artists outside his genre—artists like Kanye West. So now we have a Nick Jonas cover of “Only One.”

Upon tweeting the cover to West, Jonas offered his rationale: “I loved this song so much I had to sing it myself.” That’s as good a reason as any, I suppose, and Jonas does a good job with the song, working his silky croon in and around its gorgeous melody. He’s obviously a better pure vocalist than Kanye, but to my ear his version is a tad tame: it lacks the heart, the rough edges, and the Beatle that make the original soar.
