Did You See This? Mike Daisey Talks Kony 2012

Still from Up with Chris Hayes.

In a strange convergence of two of the week’s biggest stories, it turns out that Jason Russell and his “Kony 2012” viral video were discussed earlier this week by none other than monologist Mike Daisey. Earlier today, This American Life retracted its episode centered around Daisey’s story, saying that Daisey lied to them while they were checking the details of his account of working conditions in the Chinese factories that produce Apple products. Russell, meanwhile, was arrested on charges of public masturbation.

On the MSNBC news show Up with Chris Hayes, Daisey chewed over “Kony 2012” in the context of other storytelling that plays loose with facts in order to get across a larger point. Most of the panelists agreed that Russell’s “Kony 2012” video was perhaps a little too manipulative, but Daisey insists that there is also a role for this style of “emotional storytelling.” He also notes that most of the facts from his This American Life story were reported long before he arrived in China, but, he explains, “no one cared” before he put them together into his show “The Agony and the Ecstacy of Steve Jobs.”
