Who on earth goes to see Harry Potter at 3 a.m. on a weeknight? These are the people we met, awaiting the 2:45 a.m. showing at Washington D.C.’s Gallery Place theater in Chinatown Friday. Surprisingly, unlike their peers who saw the first showing at 12:01, few were in costume.
Terrel Jenkins, 24, and Unique Williams, 21
Terrel said he came at 3 a.m. in order to avoid the mayhem over the weekend, while Unique said she simply wanted to be the first of her friends to be able to talk about the film.

Carlyn Weller, 58, and son Caled Weller, 30
A number of people, including Carlyn, professed a love for openings in general. Attending with her son, she said she found the mania around Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 crazier than any of the Star Wars openings she had attended.

The early morning showing was scheduled to get out around 5 a.m., but Ana said she wasn't concerned, even though she had a doctor’s appointment at 8 a.m.

Jasmine Ahsaf, 26
Jasmine said she was willing to stay up late on a weeknight in order to beat lines she expected over the weekend.

Ana Castaneda, 25
The 2:45 showing was filled with people like Ana, who found that the 12:01 showing was sold out. Like many other early morning viewers, she was willing to wait for a couple hours, but not the entire day. In that sense you might say that the 3 a.m. crew was less fanatical than the midnight crew.

Wong had a good excuse for being up late: He was dragged by his Potter-obsessed sister to the movie.

Elijah Babil, 23
Like many other people at the early morning showing, Elijah said that he was there simply because the midnight screening was sold out. He was accompanied by a colleague he'd bonded with over a shared love of the books.
