The Lonely Island’s New Popstar Singles Are As Catchy As They Are Hilarious

Still from the trailer for Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping
Comedy trio the Lonely Island have shared two new, very funny singles in anticipation of their new Spinal Tap–style musical mockumentary, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. SNL alum Andy Samberg takes the lead on both “Mona Lisa” and “I’m So Humble (feat. Adam Levine)” as his Bieber-esque Popstar alter ego, Conner4Real.
As catchy as it is irreverent, “Mona Lisa” captures the near-universal disappointment of seeing Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece in person—although most are not so juvenile as to suggest that she try Rogaine for that receding hairline, nor is she usually known as “the original basic bitch.”
We already heard quite a bit of “I’m So Humble” in the trailer for Popstar (and got a peek at Adam Levine’s hologram, performing Tupac-style), but now we can hear it in full. Great things can happen when Levine and Samberg join forces in the name of musical comedy—just look at “YOLO,” which made it onto the Lonely Island’s 2013 The Wack Album—and “I’m So Humble” is no exception, capturing all the swagger you might expect from a musician with a great ego.
But though Justin Bieber is Popstar’s ostensible target, “So Humble” lifts a flow and a message straight from another famous musical egoist:
I am the Jordan and Steph Curry of music, meaning I'm the best of 2 generations.
