In a Feb. 28 "Faith-Based," Andrew Santella incorrectly stated that Catholics are expected to fast (usually by eating one meal a day) on Fridays in Lent. Fasting is expected on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Catholics are expected to abstain from eating meat on Fridays in Lent, as well as on Ash Wednesday.
In the Feb. 27 "Today's Pictures" gallery, Magnum originally and incorrectly stated that Gen. George Custer's army fought during the Wounded Knee massacre. Gen. Custer died during the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876.
In a Feb. 24 "Human Nature," William Saletan originally and incorrectly said no member of Congress has performed abortions. In fact, Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., has said that he performed two abortions to save the lives of the women in question.
In a Feb. 17 "Human Nature" news item, William Saletan originally said that the Mormon church "converted millions of Latin Americans and Polynesians with its scriptural story that they came from a lost tribe of Israel." The item should have specified that the relevant residents of Latin America are Native Americans. As the linked article from the Los Angeles Times explained, "church prophets … and missionaries have used the supposed ancestral link between the ancient Hebrews and Native Americans and later Polynesians as a prime conversion tool in Central and South America and the South Pacific."
In the Feb. 15 "Gallery," Mia Fineman misspelled the Portuguese word "doudo," from which the English "dodo" originally derived.
In a Feb. 13 "Hollywood Economist," Edward Jay Epstein mistakenly referred to Alison Lohman as a Canadian actress. She is American.
