The Shyok River has created a broad flood plain running east to west. Where glacier-fed streams meet the plain, villages create an oasis of green in an otherwise barren landscape. The Diskit gompa, the oldest and largest in the Nubra district, is home to 150 monks of the Yellow Hat sect.

Hotel Yarab Tso
The Slate "Well-Traveled" field team spent two nights in the Hotel Yarab Tso in the village of Tegar. Sixty miles from the beautiful hotel garden lies the line of control and the notorious Siachen Glacier where Pakistan and India have battled for control of a barren snowfield at the cost of hundreds of lives.

Dechen Tsemo gompa at Hundar is decorated with a massive statue of the so-called Future Buddha. The interior walls are decorated with intricate Thangka paintings that are the very essence of Tibetan art.
