Ross Douthat, New York Times columnist, is a Catholic. Elizabeth Gilbert, author of the mega-bestseller Eat, Pray, Love, is a… well, something vaguer--a spiritual-but-not-religious woman who draws on Christian thought, Buddhist thought, etc. In Douthat’s new book Bad Religion: How We Became a Nation of Heretics, he counts Gilbert’s beliefs among the “heresies” that have eroded America’s religious cohesion:
