Beautiful Souls, a new book by the journalist Eyal Press, is about people who take risks and resist social pressure to do the right thing. One of Press’s case studies is of a Serb who, during the Yugoslavian civil war, delivered Croats from Serbian captivity. It turns out this guy was a bit of jerk, and this fact helps explain his saintliness:
