The SLATE’S GENTLEMAN SCHOLAR EXPLAINING FOOTBALL TO FOREIGN PEOPLE OR AMERICAN PEOPLE WHO DON’T UNDERSTAND FOOTBALL CLEARLY AND CONCISELY CONTEST (the “Sweepstakes”) is open only to legal residents of the United States. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older.

This Sweepstakes is sponsored by The Slate Group (the “Sponsor”). This Sweepstakes is not sponsored, endorsed, administered by, or associated with Apple Inc. or its subsidiaries or affiliates. Employees, officers, directors and representatives of Sponsor and their corporate affiliates, and those with whom such persons are domiciled, are not eligible. Sweepstakes subject to all federal, state and local laws. Sweepstakes is void where prohibited. By entering, each entrant accepts and agrees to be bound by these Official Rules.

To enter, click here  or mail a 3 ½” x 5” postcard with your complete name, address, daytime phone number, email (optional), date of birth, and 120-words-or-less answer to the question “How do you explain football clearly?” to SLATE’S GENTLEMAN SCHOLAR EXPLAINING FOOTBALL TO FOREIGN PEOPLE OR AMERICAN PEOPLE WHO DON’T UNDERSTAND FOOTBALL CLEARLY AND CONCISELY CONTEST, 1350 Connecticut Ave NW, Suite 400, Washington, DC, 20036. The entry period of the Sweepstakes begins on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at midnight and runs through Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at 11:59 p.m. Mail-in entries must be postmarked by Wednesday, Dec. 25 and received by Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013.

Limit one entry per person, household address, email address, or IP address for the duration of the Sweepstakes.  All entries submitted online will be considered made by the authorized account holder of the email address provided, if any.  Duplicate or multiple entries will be disqualified. Use of any automated entry software is prohibited.

Entrants agree not to upload, post, or transmit any materials which contain any computer viruses, Easter eggs, worms, Trojan Horses, or other harmful component or programming routines that are intended to damage, detrimentally interfere with, surreptitiously intercept or expropriate any system, data or personal information.  Any attempt to deliberately damage any web site or undermine the operation of the Contest is a violation of criminal and civil laws, and Sponsor reserves the right to seek damages from any person who makes such attempt(s).  Entrants also agree not to provide or upload any content which is defamatory, threatening, distasteful, racist, unlawful or otherwise objectionable. 

Entry materials that have been tampered with or altered are void. Any questions regarding the number of entries submitted by an individual or the authorized account holder of an email address shall be determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion, and Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify any entries by persons determined to be tampering with or abusing any aspect of the Contest.

Entries that are late, incomplete, unreadable, inaccurate, unintelligible, or otherwise not in compliance with these Official Rules will be disqualified. Sponsor is not responsible for lost, destroyed or misdirected entries.  

PRIZE: One (1) copy of Don DeLillo’s End Zone, retail price $15, or one (1) Nerf Turbo Jr. football, retail price $12.99.

No substitutions, exchanges, refunds, or cash redemptions of prizes by Winner is permitted. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute a prize, in which case a prize of equal or greater value will be awarded. Sponsor reserves the right to terminate the Sweepstakes without awarding the prize if no eligible winners or alternate winners claim the prize within the required time period.

Winners are responsible for any and all local, state, and federal taxes associated with claiming this prize. Sponsor will report any individual winnings over $600 (in cash or fair market value of goods or services) in a one-year period to the Internal Revenue Service.  Winners will receive a Form 1099 from Sponsor if Sponsor reports any winnings to the Internal Revenue Service.

SELECTION OF WINNER: One (1) winner will be selected by representatives from THE SLATE GROUP from all eligible entries received on or before the Sweepstakes deadline. The winner will be notified by The Slate Group on or about Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014.  Winner will be notified first by email, then by phone if Sponsor is unable to locate Winner by email. The number of eligible entries will determine the odds of winning. Sponsors not obligated to leave voice mail, answering machine, or other message.  In Sponsors’ sole discretion, a selected winner may be required to forfeit a prize and an alternate winner may be selected in accordance with these Official Rules from among the remaining eligible entries for that prize if selected winner (i) fails to respond to Sponsor within ten (10) days of notification, (ii) declines or cannot accept, receive or use the prize for any reason, or (iii) fails to comply with these Official Rules.

SLATE’S USE OF SUBMISSIONS: Subject to Slate’s Discussion and Submission Guidelines.

CONDITIONS AND RESTRICTIONS APPLY: Winner must continue to comply with all terms and conditions of these Official Rules and winning is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements. Proof of U.S. residency, age, and identity are required to claim a prize.  Winner is subject to verification by Sponsor, whose decisions are final and binding in all matters related to the Sweepstakes. An entrant is not a winner of any prize unless and until entrant’s eligibility has been verified and entrant has been notified that verification is complete.

Names and email address of Sweepstakes participants may be used for future marketing solicitations by Sponsor. By accepting a prize, winner agrees and acknowledges that Sponsors may use winner's name, voice, biographical data, likeness and city name in any and all media throughout the universe and in perpetuity for promotional purposes without additional compensation, except where prohibited by law.

LIMITATION OF LIABILITY AND GENERAL CONDITIONS: By participating in this Sweepstakes, entrants agree to be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of the judges, which are final and binding in all respects. By entering, each entrant agrees to release, discharge, indemnify, and hold harmless the Sponsor and each of its parent companies, affiliates, subsidiaries and advertising and marketing agencies and each of their respective employees, officers, shareholders, directors, representatives and agents (collectively, “Releasees”) from and against any claims, damages or liability involving or arising out of  (i) late, lost, delayed, misdirected, postage due, mutilated, incomplete, unreadable, inaccurate, garbled or unintelligible entries; (ii) telephone system, technical or computer malfunctions, lost connections, disconnections, transmission or other errors of any kind whether mechanical, human, electronic or otherwise; (iii) data corruption, theft, destruction, unauthorized access to or alteration of entry or other materials; (iv) any injuries, losses or damages of any kind caused, including death, in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, by the prize or resulting from acceptance, possession or use or misuse of any prize or from participating in the Sweepstakes or any Sweepstakes related activity; or (v) any printing, distribution, typographical, administrative, human or technological errors involving or associated with the Sweepstakes. Sponsors disclaim any liability for damage to any computer system resulting from participating in, or accessing or downloading information in connection with the Sweepstakes.

SPONSOR’S RESERVATION OF RIGHTS: Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to modify, cancel, or suspend this Sweepstakes (or any portion of the Sweepstakes) should any virus, bug, computer problem, force majeure, or other cause or problem corrupt or inhibit the administration, security or proper operation of the Sweepstakes. In such situation (or in the event of any type of error), Sponsor reserves the right to select the winners from eligible entries received prior to the action taken or in such manner as deemed fair and appropriate by Sponsors. In no event will Sponsors be liable for more than the stated number of prizes in these Official Rules. Sponsors may prohibit entrant from participating in the Sweepstakes or winning a prize if, in its sole discretion, it determines entrant is attempting to undermine the legitimate operation of the Sweepstakes by cheating, hacking, deception, or other unfair practices or intending to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other entrant or Sponsors’ representatives. Releasees have not made and/or are not responsible for any misrepresentation or guaranty, express or implied, in fact or in law, relative to the prizes.

By entering the Sweepstakes, entrants agree that: (1) any and all disputes, claims, and causes of action arising out of or connected with the Sweepstakes, or any prizes awarded, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action; (2) any and all claims, judgments and awards shall be limited to actual out‑of‑pocket costs incurred, including costs associated with entering the Sweepstakes, but in no event will attorneys’ fees be awarded or recoverable; and (3) under no circumstances will any entrant be permitted to obtain any award for, and entrant hereby knowingly and expressly waives all rights to seek, punitive, incidental or consequential damages and/or any other damages, other than actual out‑of‑pocket expenses, and/or any and all rights to have damages multiplied or otherwise increased. 

PRIVACY POLICY/DISCLOSURES OF INFORMATION: Sponsor may collect and use personal information that entrants provide to enter the Sweepstakes to actually conduct the Sweepstakes and contact potential winners. Personal information includes any information that can be tracked back to a specific individual use, including name, postal address, and telephone number. As noted above, Sponsor (including any successors or assigns) may use names and email addresses of Sweepstakes participants for future marketing solicitations by Sponsor. Otherwise, no personal information that Sponsor collects in connection with the administration of the Sweepstakes will be sold or given to anyone who may contact entrants for any purpose not related to the sweepstakes.
