This month, Michael Agger, Meghan O'Rourke, and Troy Patterson discuss Jaimy Gordon's Lord of Misrule, the National Book Award-winning novel set in the early 1970s at a seedy West Virginia race track. Our critics agree that Gordon's going for capital-L literary—her prose is purple, even vermillion, and the author favors antiquated nouns. They found this tack aggravating at times but warmed to Gordon's story the more they read.
