A relatively late painting by Magritte. Surrealist specialist dealers often disparage the overwhelming popularity of his “apples and bowler hats,” which has helped bowdlerize perceptions of the movement. But all acknowledge that his full oeuvre was uniquely captivating and enigmatic. If you reverse this painting (or hang upside down in front of your computer), another image will emerge.
