Uh-Oh: Goal From Germany’s Thomas Müller Makes U.S. Fans Very, Very Nervous

Thomas Müller's grogeous strike, his fourth goal of the tournament, has the U.S. in a bit more trouble. With Ghana tied with Portugal 1–1, the United States is now (if current results hold) just one Ghanaian goal away from being eliminated from the 2014 World Cup. If the U.S. loses 1–0 and Ghana wins 2–1, then it's all over for the Americans in Brazil. But if the U.S. loses 2–1 and Ghana wins 2–1, then the Americans will still advance.

Confused? Jeremy Stahl has all the tiebreakers here, and the New York Times' Upshot blog has a handy chart. That chart could help ESPN announcer Ian Darke, who has seemed very confused about the possible scenarios.

And for more on USA-Germany and Portugal-Ghana as the games happen, follow Stahl’s live blog.
