Today’s biggest stories:
- Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy wrapped his gun-control filibuster up at 2:11 a.m. this morning, announcing that Democrats had secured promises that the Senate would hold a vote on universal-background-check and terror-watch-list legislation.
- Per Slate’s Josh Voorhees, it’s probable that votes would have ended up being held on those issues anyway, and the terror watch list is a flawed concept. On the other hand, he says, the filibuster was still useful—even admirable—political theater.
- Murphy was not allowed to leave to use the bathroom (or even to sit down) during his 15 hours holding the Senate floor.
- A member of British parliament was killed in what may have been a politically motivated attack related to the country’s upcoming European Union membership vote.
- An on-duty Chicago police officer reportedly referred to President Obama as a “nigger” in a conversation with coworkers.
- And here’s today’s Trump Apocalypse Watch.
Have a good night out there.
