British member of Parliament Jo Cox has died after being shot and stabbed after a meeting with constituents in the village of Birstall, reports say. (Birstall is roughly 200 miles north of London.)

The motive for the attack is not yet clear—one witness says Cox’s assailant shouted “Britain first,” a slogan that is also the name of a far-right nationalist party that opposes European Union membership, and others say she appeared to have been directly targeted. (A nationwide vote over whether to leave the EU is being held next Thursday; Cox was a member of the liberal Labour Party and supports remaining in the EU.) But at least one other witness says Cox was attacked when she intervened in an ongoing altercation.

A 52-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the killing.
