The Honest Trailer for La La Land Joins the La La Land–Bashing Club, but It Still Holds Some Surprises

Does Damien Chazelle secretly hate jazz? The Honest Trailer for La La Land suggests that he might—why else would he make not one but two movies about a man who “loves jazz so much that he ends up alone”? Screen Junkies hop on the La La Land–bashing bandwagon months after the Oscars to point out that despite the movie’s idealized portrait of Los Angeles—one where the landmarks are never crowded—this is basically a movie about two selfish people who refuse to compromise and demonstrate a total disregard for anyone besides themselves. (Stop talking while the band is performing, Ryan Gosling!)

The Honest Trailer goes on to poke fun at a movie that has already received more than its fair share of backlash, including Gosling and Emma Stone’s less-than-perfect singing voices (“It proves it’s easier to teach a world-class singer how to act than two world-class actors how to sing”). But then, just when you think you’ve heard every piece of La La Land criticism there is, things take an Oscar-style turn. Well played, Screen Junkies.
