Veep’s Season 5 Trailer Imagines a 2016 Election Even Crazier Than Our Real One

Season 4 of HBO’s Veep reached new levels of barely conceivable electoral absurdity when Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Selina Meyer, having been elevated mid-term from VP to the presidency and now seeking her own first full term, finished election night in a dead electoral tie. This means that, per electoral law, Congress will be tasked with breaking the presidential deadlock. Who would’ve predicted that the gap between seasons would see the absurdity of our real-life election cycle surpass the show’s?

Keeping up with the ridiculousness of this election year has proven to be no small feat: Even shows as typically over-the-top as House of Cards and Scandal have presented election storylines that weren’t quite as deranged and scary as the real thing. But Veep has long offered the best political satire of all of these shows, and the trailer for Season 5 makes clear that it will do its best to keep pace when it returns on April 24.
