Not only did the Surrealists help to popularize de Sade, but they symbolically reburied him in accordance with his wish (an unmarked grave) in a notorious 1959 performance piece. This illustration, from one of "de Sade's classics," Eugénie de Franval, was drawn by Valentine Hugo, who came to the movement in the 1930s.
