It usually doesn’t make much sense to use the word “upset” when referring to Golden Globe winners, since the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has a proud history of bucking conventional wisdom when it comes to picking favorites. But Rachel Bloom’s win in the Best Actress, Television Series Musical or Comedy category just might qualify as an upset, if only because virtually no one is watching her CW show, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (and because Julia Louis-Dreyfus was heavily favored to win the category for Veep).
Bloom’s acceptance speech was wonderfully exuberant and madcap in a way that didn’t feel contrived, much like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend itself. Bloom recounted the many network rejections she and co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna faced before the CW took a chance on the musical comedy. She also referred to her improbable journey from creator of funny music videos to TV lead: “Aline saw my YouTube videos, and 2½ years later I am standing onstage with a Golden Globe.” Here’s hoping Bloom’s acceptance speech will encourage more people to discover Crazy Ex-Girlfriend so that it can be eligible for more Golden Globes in years to come.
