One of my favorite movies at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was The Overnight—and not just because of its free and open embrace of male full-frontal nudity. Patrick Brice’s raunchy comedy features a great cast—Adam Scott, Jason Schwartzman, Taylor Schilling, and Judith Godrèche—and plenty of genuinely funny moments, while also flipping the script on Hollywood gender norms.
The official trailer is here, and if it leads you to think of it as a modern-day twist on Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, you wouldn’t be too far off base. Scott and Schilling play Alex and Emily, a couple new to Los Angeles who are invited over for dinner and a children’s playdate by the free-spirited, hippie-ish Kurt (Schwartzman). After putting their kids to bed, Alex, Emily, Kurt, and Kurt’s wife Charlotte (Godrèche) get to know each other a little better—and that’s when things get, well, interesting: “It’s a photography zone,” Kurt says, as he show’s Alex his downstairs man-cave. “You know, you’ve got a really good look. Did anyone ever tell you that?”
Without giving too much away, it’s safe to say that lots of weird, sexy, awkward, and unpredictable events follow. I recommend you keep an eye out for this movie when it finally bares it all this June.
