A little less than a year ago, we brought you illustrator Gary Card’s GIF of every Prince hairstyle from 1978 to 2013. Now this new GIF from illustrator Helen Green (which we’re reprinting with Green’s permission) suggests that maybe Bowie has a shot at Prince’s throne.

As Open Culture reminds us, Bowie has been a trailblazer with his hair since the beginning. His first TV appearance, as a 17-year-old in 1964, was as spokesman for “The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men.” (“I think we’re all fairly tolerant,” he said, “but for the last two years we’ve had comments like ‘Darling!’ and ‘Can I carry your handbag?’ thrown at us, and I think it just has to stop now.”) He’s never stopped innovating.
