Jon Stewart Gets Serious on the Eric Garner Decision: “I Honestly Don’t Know What to Say”

On Wednesday, a Staten Island grand jury announced it would not indict the police officer caught on video choking Eric Garner to death in July. That night, Jon Stewart opened the Daily Show with an uncharacteristically serious speech about the decision. “If comedy is tragedy plus time, I need more fucking time,” he said, noting that the Eric Garner decision came just days after last week’s grand jury decision not to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson for the death of Michael Brown. “But I would really settle for less fucking tragedy.”
We’ve seen Stewart take on a more sober tone before—most famously in his first show after 9/11—and, once again, he’s summed up what’s on a lot of people’s minds: “We’re definitely not living in a post-racial society.”
