The Better Call Saul Music Video Is a Great Advertisement, but a Better Song

Junior Brown.

Still from YouTube.

Few Breaking Bad fans will forget one of the show’s more idiosyncratic touches—“Negro y Azul,” the narcocorrido music video that opened a second season episode and told the story of “the gringo called Heisenberg.” Now we have a parallel of sorts for Better Call Saul, the spin-off series that will star Bob Odenkirk’s smarmy and ethics-averse attorney. It’s called, aptly enough, “Better Call Saul: The Song.”

Showrunners Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan penned the lyrics, show composer Dave Porter did the music, and country veteran Junior Brown performs amidst some desert landscape and a large, inflated Statue of Liberty. While a clever play on both “Negro y Azul” and the many Saul Goodman advertisements we saw on Breaking Bad, the song is also surprisingly good. Brown’s fleet-fingered picking is a joy, and the lyrics (“shopping at a Wal-Mart short just a couple o’ beans/there’s a George Foreman grill down the back of your blue jeans”) strike a charming note somewhere between humorous and hokey.  Better Call Saul airs in February.
