The Denisovans are named after a cave in cold Siberia where scientists discovered fragments of a girl who died tens of thousands of years ago. Her bones looked awfully Neanderthal, but DNA extracted from a finger bone showed enough distinctions to count as a separate line of Homo—the first extinct species discovered solely through genetic, not anatomical, evidence.
