Most of the breath-analysis equipment currently being tested for diagnosis—mass spectrographs and gas chromatographs—can only be used experimentally and couldn't be adapted for clinical use. The few exceptions are special-purpose machines that analyze exhaled air to diagnose a single condition. One machine, for instance, diagnoses lactose intolerance. Another diagnoses infections of the stomach lining with the bacteria responsible for ulcers.
