Assignment to a reduced-size classroom led to a 12 percent jump in high-school graduation rates. The results were even more impressive if the study was limited to the poorest kids—the ones who were eligible for free lunches. They were 18 percent more likely to graduate from high school. Smaller classes also led to a 3.7 percent increase in college attendance (4 percent for the free-lunch kids).
