The author of The East, the West, and Sex defends his book.

Nothing serves the righteously indignant like a handy enemy, and where there's no real enemy handy, the temptation to create one can be irresistible. That at any rate seems to me to explain the luridly indignant review of my book, The East, the West, and Sex, that appeared a few weeks ago in Slate. Normally I think book writers should take their lumps in silence, but the Slate review was so willfully uncomprehending, so brim-full of moralistic error and ad hominem falsehood, that it's too hard not to reply.

Editor's note: This week Slate introduces an improved version of "The Fray," our reader feedback forum. The Fray now features threaded discussions of Slate articles. If you'd like to discuss something you've read on the site, scroll to the bottom of that article and click on "Post a Message." (You can also click on "Comment on This Article" from the Utilities dropdown at the top and bottom of a page.) Or, if you'd rather just lurk, click on "Read Messages" at the bottom of a page to find out what everyone else had to say. In the future we'll incorporate the most insightful postings from The Fray into "E-mail to the Editors," and eventually we'll replace E-mail to the Editors with "The Best of the Fray."
