  <title>In The Year of Magical Thinking, Didion picks on Didion.</title>

  <description><![CDATA[  In the Broadway production of Joan Didion's celebrated memoir, The Year of Magical Thinking, the character Joan Didion is a woman with a mania for order and precision. She is a woman who prefers to be in control. After her husband, John Gregory Dunne, dies of a heart attack in their Manhattan living room, she obtains the EMT report, the physician's record, the doorman's log, and then she "cross-checks" the various documents with the goal of "assembling the facts." When her adult daughter, Quintana, is admitted to the ICU with acute pneumonia and subsequently falls into septic shock, she memorizes the many medical terms she encounters ("I wanted names. I wrote them down. I looked them up.") and terrorizes the hospital staff with her demands ("I do not distrust those in charge but I do feel compelled to manage them"). We are clearly to regard her behavior as a tad immoderate. "Errors are easy to find—if you're me," Vanessa Redgrave, playing Joan Didion, says crisply. She also frequently repeats a criticism Dunne used to level at her: Why do you always have to be right. Why do you always have to have the last word. For once in your life just let it go. This charge, mentioned briefly and late in the memoir, becomes, early on in the play, Didion's self-flagellating refrain.<br /><br />[<a href="http://www.slate.com/id/2163513/?from=rss">more ...</a>]  ]]></description>

  <description><![CDATA[  Attend a performance of Twyla Tharp's new Bob Dylan musical The Times They Are A-Changin', and you'll inevitably find yourself wondering: What on earth would Bob Dylan make of this? What would he make of the "Highway 61 Revisited" production number, during which a circus ringleader bellows, "For the first time anywhere … live on our stage … God!"—at which point a dancer, dressed as the white-bearded and be-dreadlocked deity, lurches onstage atop 10-foot stilts? And what about "Like a Rolling Stone," a spectacle that features a mammoth balloon shaped like a circus sideshow fat lady, clowns bouncing on exercise balls, and an earnest young man belting out "How does it feeeel?" while air-strumming an oversized sequined guitar?   <title>How to turn a movie into a musical.</title>

  <description><![CDATA[  When The Wedding Singer opened on April 27, it became the fifth musical running on Broadway that was adapted from a movie, joining other screen-to-stage adaptations like Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Monty Python's Spamalot (based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail), Hairspray, and The Producers, the mega-hit that probably launched the current wave of movie-to-musical transformations. Several other Broadway offerings like Lestat, Wicked, and The Color Purple, while not strictly adaptations of films, share source material with hit movies and are clearly hoping to benefit from the association. The trend shows no sign of flagging; Legally Blonde opens on Broadway in April 2007 and if the musical adaptation of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is a hit in Sydney, there's no doubt it will be headed for Times Square next.
