Mr. McDermott's Neighborhood

On Tuesday, Dec. 26, software engineer Michael McDermott allegedly shot seven of his co-workers in a suburban Boston office. One neighbor told the Boston Herald that McDermott "kept quiet and never talked about the company.'' Last year, David Plotz and Hanna Rosin wrote that such "trite comments say a lot more about the state of modern American neighborliness than they do about the [homicidal] neighbors themselves."
