Even true NASCAR innovators are cheaters until proved innocent. A few years ago, a team introduced the one-pump jack, which lifted cars with a single push instead of the three pumps everyone else used. This was a huge time saver during pit stops and a major advantage. Other teams assumed the secret was compressed air, hidden inside the jack and powering it—illegally. In fact, the secret of the one-pump jack was just a stepped-up mechanical advantage and an extremely strong dude. Totally kosher. Soon, everyone had one—the jack and the dude.
