This week marks the 75th anniversary of The New Yorker. To commemorate the occasion, no fewer than six books are being published (click on each to buy): Wonderful Town: New York Stories From The New Yorker, edited by David Remnick and Susan Choi; Life Stories: Profiles From The New Yorker, edited by David Remnick and Susan Choi; Gone: The Last Days of The New Yorker, by Renata Adler; About Town: The New Yorker and the World It Made, by Ben Yagoda; Letters From the Editor: The New Yorker's Harold Ross, edited by Thomas Kunkel; and Some Times in America, by Slate's own Alexander Chancellor. In 1997, Slate's David Plotz described the spendthrift culture of the Condé Nast magazine empire. In 1998, Jim Holt reviewed two books about William Shawn—the inscrutable and legendary New Yorker editor—and David Plotz assessed former editor Tina Brown. And earlier this year, New Yorker editorial assistants Bill Wasik and Erica Youngren satirized the entire genre of New Yorker books.
