"It Seems To Me ..."

Herbert Stein, Slate contributor and dear friend, died this Wednesday afternoon. Stein warmed all of us with his thoughts on love, life and, yes, macroeconomics. All Slate's contributors have smarts; Stein was one of the few with wisdom. He was the first Prudence, and we have selected three of our favorites (click here, here, and here). We have also selected this piece, written from a cafe near the Kennedy Center--a reflection on the "average" couples walking by. "To the man whose hand or arm she is holding, she is not 'average.' She is the whole world to him. They may argue occasionally, or even frequently. He may have an eye for the cute intern in his office. But that is superficial. Fundamentally, she is the most valuable thing in his life."
