
Who initiated the shift? Hard to say; Michael Spence, currently dean of the Stanford Business School, and Princeton's Avinash Dixit would certainly count among the early pioneers. But a characteristic of the whole era was that ideas seemed to be in the air; it often happened that several people would simultaneously and independently write more or less the same paper.
