The study, written by Richard L. Zweigenhaft and G. William Domhoff and recently published by Yale University Press, finds that women, blacks, and Latinos are slowly beginning to nudge the glass ceiling but that there's a lot of pressure on them not to rock the white male boat. In order to demonstrate loyalty, the newcomers conform--taking up golf, for example, whether they want to or not. (Former Secretary of Energy Hazel O'Leary describes how for years she thought she could get by without learning golf, but by the early 1990s she finally caved in.) As a result, though the new corporate elite is far more diverse than it's ever been, in values and behavior it's utterly, depressingly continuous with that of previous generations.
