Brown & Williamson's Project Ariel sought as early as the 1960s to create a safer cigarette. Philip Morris developed futuristic smokes--Premier (1988) and Eclipse (1994)--that delivered nicotine and tobacco "flavor" while reducing tars by 90 percent.
