We're All Star Wars Fans Now

Moviegoers are flocking to The Phantom Menace despite its dismissal by the critics (including Slate's David Edelstein and Bruce Gottlieb). In 1997, Louis Menand explored the enduring popularity of the Star Wars saga, which he described as a cross between Happy Days and The Wizard of Oz. Hint: The appeal of George Lucas' creation has nothing to do with digital illusion and everything to do with digital reality.
