For misleading, inflammatory use of pedophilia, there is no finer example than the 1998 Senate race between New Yorkers Al D'Amato and Chuck Schumer. First D'Amato accused Schumer of coddling child pornographers. His justification was a vote Schumer cast 20 years ago in the state Assembly on a bill that had nothing to do with child pornography. Schumer countered by accusing D'Amato of coddling child pornographers. Why? Because D'Amato had opposed a $30 billion crime bill that also happened to include tougher penalties for pornographers.
