The prisoners were generally trying to kill themselves or to create an incident that would get them out of prison for a little while. None of the cases required anything more invasive than an enema. In some cases, nothing was found on X-ray, and the incident was suspected to be factitious. Each patient passed the ingested object or objects (razors, thumbtacks, staples, etc.) without incident.
