Heaven's Gate hints at the much wider Internet controversy over Hale-Bopp. In November, an amateur astronomer in Texas named Chuck Shramek posted a photograph on the Internet showing the comet near another bright object. Soon Shramek and an organization called the Farsight Institute were claiming that the object was a UFO, trailing the comet toward Earth. UFO enthusiasts were ecstatic, and jammed the alt.aliens.visitors Usenet group with comments. Professional astronomers ridicule the claim: The "UFO" is a star, and the rotation of the Earth makes it appear to follow Hale-Bopp. For the views of mainstream astronomers, check out this Comet Hale-Bopp Home Page.
