In late May, a group of divers recovered a 3,000-pound anchor from what is believed to be a ship belonging to Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard. Many archeologists believe that the 300-year-old wreckage off the North Carolina coast is the remains of Queen Anne’s Revenge, Blackbeard’s flagship for much of his short but storied career as a pirate. Both Blackbeard and his ship appear in the most recent installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Before recovering the anchor, archaeologists had already excavated more than 250,000 artifacts from the site, which was discovered in 1996. On June 11, the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort will unveil the largest-ever exhibit of pirate artifacts from the shipwreck.
