Cocktails for a Better Planet

Slate invites you to have drinks and brainstorm ideas about energy efficiency on March 10 in Washington, D.C.

Ever since I’ve been the father of small children, and have passed most of my early evenings rereading The Very Hungry Caterpillar, I have had the following fantasy: I get to spend the evening swapping ideas with really intelligent people—and then we all have drinks.

This is why I’m delighted to invite you to participate in an excellent Slate event on March 10 in Washington, D.C., where we are going to do just that.

We at Slatehave long known that the magazine’s most exceptional asset is our readers. I’m not flattering you when I say that you’re an astonishingly intelligent, engaged, and clever group—and handsome, too. And you’ve proved that during Slate’s new crowd-sourcing project, The Efficient Life, in which we’re generating practical ideas for helping people use less energy. Slate readers have already sent in more than 400 ideas, and thousands of comments, about how people can be more energy frugal and save money in the process.

And now we’d like you to come discuss those ideas—and have some cocktails—with us.

At 5:30 p.m., on Wednesday, March 10, we’re going to meet at the House of Sweden in Georgetown (one of D.C.’s greenest buildings, incidentally). Several extremely creative energy thinkers—see below—will talk briefly about personal energy efficiency and how to encourage it. After that, we’ll break into groups and generate ideas about energy efficiency—ideas that we will publish and publicize on Slate. And then we’ll have a few drinks!

I hope to see you there. The full text of the invitation is below. If you’d like to attend, please RSVP to HiveRSVP@slate.com.
